Leicester's Belmont Hotel working towards best possible environmental credentials

We’re keen to be as environmentally friendly as possible at The Belmont Hotel, not everything can be done overnight, but we have made major inroads into improving our environmental credentials.  Some of the areas we are particularly successful with are:

  • Glass, paper, can, cardboard and print cartridge recycling
  • Energy efficient boiler management
  • Energy efficient lighting
  • Water saving devices
  • PIR lighting controls
  • Energy saving switches in all rooms when refurbished

Hotel guests who are staying for more than one night and are happy to use their towels more than once are asked to place them on the towel rail.  We're also moving towards FSC printwork.

In 2009 the Belmont Hotel in De Montfort Street Leicester won the ‘Green Award’ from the Comedy Festival.  The hotel’s ‘green’ credentials were measured across a number of criteria covering bedrooms, function rooms and back room offices.

The Belmont Hotel uses energy saving lighting throughout the hotel, with PIR lighting wherever possible.  It has installed a Government supported boiler management system to ensure that heating levels are matched to weather conditions.  The hotel’s lofts have been re-insulated, paper, card, ink cartridges, carpets and furniture are all recycled or re-used through the charitable sector and cisterns are fitted with devices which save one litre of water per flush.

Maintenance Manager Julian Blakeman said:  “We have had an environmental policy for many years and have always been interested in doing what we could to minimise wastage at all levels, but we have only just begun to seek recognition for some of the things we are doing.  We are delighted that the Comedy Festival has recognised us in this way.   This is just the beginning and we are constantly looking at all our systems in an attempt to continuously improve in this field.”

We believe we are one of the strongest hotels in Leicester for the work we are doing in this area and intend to make further inroads during 2010.
